There will be some who will say that their feelings are automatic, in just the way I have said perceptual experiences are. I think this is false, because I think that an emotion is a kind of evaluation, or comes about through one’s evaluation, of the events towards which one has the emotion. Rational-emotive therapy has demonstrated the possibility of controlling one’s emotions through these evaluations. Those who say they cannot control their emotions, I believe, are those who simply choose not to.
